I hate frustrating games, and MOH: U felt like at worst frustration and punishing, and at best, a copy of the first game. I never felt more relieved then when I finished that last level in the train station. Not to mention the Panzerfaust assholes hiding in corners. The enemies were lethal, they didn't miss ONE SHOT, and the MP 44 dealt CRAZY damage in their hands.

Of course, that didn't affect the enemies.Īnd when the MP 44 started showing up, at the last 2 levels I just wanted to quit. I feel like the most used gun through Underground was the MP 40 and for some reason, it felt like absolute ass to use, taking many rounds to kill one enemy and with completely useless accuracy at any medium distance. Again, starting in the later levels the enemies became more and more unforgiving, the healing more and more rare and the good weapons less used. Plus, it helped that the weapons felt good, from the garand to the trench gun and machine guns. Now, don't get me wrong, I love me some challenge in my shooters, and the first game was just right for me, especially the last mission with the waves of soldiers coming at us. A fine idea to be sure, but when implemented on a limited console such as the PS1, with that awful render distance, just made the levels feel very, very labyrinthian and confusing, in contrast to the first game, that were more like straightforward and corridors.īut the biggest problem, and the killer for me, is the difficulty. When Underground really reared its ugly head for me was in the later levels (the desert onwards), when two main problems arose for me: The first one was that they tried expanding the levels and making them a bit more diverse. Yes, as you said, it's quite similar to the first game, sometimes even to a fault, sometimes it feels too much like the first game, and those were my best moments with it. I really have to think the studio ran out of time or resources though, they were pumping up up to 2 games per year back then. Indeed, MOH Rising Sun was ambitious, and it failed. I don't hate this game, I didn't finish it thinking "thank Zeus it's over" like some other MOH games (cough cough Underground cough cough) but I just left underwhelmed, as instead of being the ultimate WW2 pacific front shooter, at least on the consoles, it's just a forgettable, unpolished and unoptimized (at least on the PS2) 5/10 game.

Granted, it still has plenty of fun to be had in its levels (like riding a bloody elephant!), and I feel like the team did the best they could with the time and resources they had.but it really feels like they did not have enough time and resources!Įither if they were diverted to focus on this game's PC sibiling, Medal of Honor Pacific Assault (which is next up on the log) or to the multiplayer mode which I hear was quite popular until it was closed in 2006, I just don't know. It's a very, very rough game, from muddy textures, to unimaginative level design, to shoddy framerates and the appalling length. It's in many aspects, the opposite of Frontline, especially in the polish front. MOH: Frontline was a such a well polished, fun experience that had its challenges and unique moments, and for the first time in a medal of honor game, a slightly interesting storylineīut now, after only an astonishing 5 days (playing 1.5 missions per day, to a total of 9), I finish Rising Sun with a question mark Recording my recent history replaying the Medal of Honor games, it went more or less like this: MOH - 9/10 Amazing, Underground - 4/10 rubbish, Allied Assault 7/10 good, and Frontline 8/10 great!Īfter Frontline, especially, my expectations with Rising Sun were through the roof!
